Iceland is the ideal country for soft adventure hiking. Featuring trails that display its beautiful natural wonders, this small group tour invites you to take short guided hikes on trails through world-famous attractions & lesser known but equally fantastic destinations alike. Enjoy an ideal combination of traditional sightseeing and refreshing short hikes to discover Iceland in a way you could never imagine. Explore fantastic locations such as Asbyrgi (Bastion of the Gods) and Thorsmork Nature Reserve, experience the local culture and atmosphere while visiting lovely local towns such as Siglufjordur. You will also have the opportunity to relax in geothermal hot pots, a perfect way to end a fun day on scenic trails.

Itinerary:

  1. Arrival, sightseeing Reykjavik.
  2. Reykjavik – Hvalfjordur – Borgarfjordur.
  3. Borgarfjordur - Glanni and Grabrok - Vididalur Valley - Hofsos - Siglufjordur.
  4. Siglufjordur – Historical Mountain Pass – Herring Heritage.
  5. Godafoss – Hverfjall – Lake Myvatn.
  6. Asbyrgi - Jokulsargljufur – Dettifoss.
  7. Kjolur - Hveravellir – Gullfoss – Geysir.
  8. Day in Landmannalaugar.
  9. Thorsmork - Seljalandsfoss – Reykjavik.
  10. Departure day.

Overview:

  1. Eight days guided tour as per itinerary from and to Reykjavík is included.
  2. Accommodation for two nights with facilities in Reykjavík is included.
  3. Accommodation for seven nights with facilities in countryside is included.
  4. Breakfast provided on daily basis except arrival day and dinner for four days in the countryside (day 2, 5, 6 and 7) is included.
  5. Icelandic traditional complementary meat-soup dinner at a local’s home on day three is provided.
  6. On day six, seven, eight and nine packed lunch is provided.
  7. On day 3 hike over Siglufjardarskard Pass with local guide and entrance to the Herring Era Museum is included within the package.

DAY 01 – Arrival, sightseeing Reykjavik

Upon arrival at the airport it is your responsibility to transfer to Reykjavik. We recommend the easy and convenient FlyBus Plus transfers, which can be booked through Iceland Travel. Once you arrive in Reykjavik the day is left for you to do as you please.

DAY 02 – Reykjavik – Hvalfjordur – Borgarfjordur

After breakfast the day begins with a short orientation tour of Reykjavík. You will be driven to Glymur via the scenic coastline of Hvalfjordur Fjord. Glymur is Icelands tallest waterfall measuring at an impressive 200 meters. After you spend some time hiking & exploring the area you will then move on to see Hraunfossar “’Lava” waterfalls and the Deildartunguhver, the most powerful rushing hot springs in Europe.

Note: You will then be transferred to Borgarfjordur for an overnight stay.

DAY 03 – Borgarfjordur – Glanni and Grabrok – Vididalur Valley – Hofsos – Siglufjordu

After another early breakfast you will begin hiking in Borgarfjordur. The journey will lead you to Glanni, a multi-tiered waterfall rumoured to be a home for elves and trolls. You will then visit the 3,500 year old Grabrok crater, which has hiking trails taking you to the top of the crater for remarkable views over moss-covered lava fields. The hike then continues as you cross Holtavorduheidi plateau, the gateway between North and South Iceland. Here you will Head to Vididalur Valley and its rushing river & hike in Kolugljufri, a lava rock canyon that leads to a hidden waterfall. The journey then continues to the charming village of Hofsos to take a short stroll down to Stadarbjargarvik inlet to admire the group of beautifully geometric basalt columns located right at sea level. The day ends with a drive to Siglufjordur for an overnight stay.

Day 04 – Siglufjordur – Historical Mountain Pass – Herring Heritage

In the morning you will have the opportunity to visit the award-winning Herring Era Museum, where the harbour atmosphere of the early 20th century is brought to life in three historical buildings.

The hiking then begins through Siglufjardarskard Pass, led by an expert local guide who will decide what parts of the trail you will explore based on the experience level of the group and trail conditions.

After an active day outdoors, visit the home of a local resident for a home-cooked meal of hearty Icelandic meat soup featuring local ingredients.

DAY 05 – Godafoss – Hverfjall – Lake Myvatn

After breakfast you will head to Akureyri, the colourful “capital” of North Iceland. The journey then continues to Godafoss, ‘Waterfall of the Gods’ and then to the Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve, a geological wonderland of wildly contrasting nature. Summertime is peak birding season, so it‘s good to have some binoculars on hand to catch diverse species, possibly even the rare Barrow´s golden eye. Next, hike up to Mt. Leirhnjukur hot spring area and then to Namaskard geothermal field to view boiling fumaroles and violently bubbling pools of mud. The tour will then make a stop at the Myvatn Nature Baths where you can see how the locals benefit from the geothermal activity. There will be a chance for an optional swim in the warm and soothing waters.

DAY 06 – Asbyrgi – Jokulsargljufur – Dettifoss

Today’s first destination is Asbyrgi National Park, where you can enjoy the huge horse shoe shaped canyon. The journey will then continue on to Hljodaklettar, the “echo rocks”. The remainder of your afternoon is spent exploring the lush vegetation and forested areas of Hlodaklettar. The day ends with an unforgettable visit to Europe’s mightiest waterfall, Dettifoss, a thundering cascade of glacial water and mist among shattered cliffs.

Note: You will then return to Myvatn for an overnight stay.

DAY 07 – Kjolur – Hveravellir – Gullfoss – Geysir

After breakfast you will take a route that goes back to Viking times and heads straight through Iceland’s uninhabited interior highlands, passing between the mighty Langjokull and Hofsjokull glaciers. Your group will stop at Hveravellir, multi-coloured geothermal with a natural pool that is perfect for a relaxing break. The Kjolur highland route emerges into civilization again in the Gullfoss and Geysir area, Gullfoss, the majestic waterfall of sparkling mist and golden charm is situated on the Hvita River, which is fed by Iceland’s second largest glacier, Langjokull. You can then enjoy the hotel´s geothermal hot tub and sauna, where you will have an overnight stay.

DAY 08 – Day in Landmannalaugar

Today you will remain in the Landmannalaugar area, exploring Hekla Volcano, hot springs & enjoying the many scenic trails in the area.

DAY 09 –  Thorsmork – Seljalandsfoss – Reykjavik

Today’s destination is Thorsmork Nature Reserve. This enchanted hidden valley is nestled between two glaciers and protected by rivers and mountains. On the way to Thorsmork, stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can gain a different perspective by walking behind the curtain of cascading water. Once within Thorsmork, walk along marked trails in the beautiful scenery of delicate trees and green grass surrounded by towering mountains and glacial tongues. After a beautiful day here, the tour heads to Reykjavik.

Scenic Trails – Soft Iceland Hiking

IMPORTANT:

  • Hikes range from 1-5 hours. These are soft adventure hikes with intermediate (moderate) levels of difficulty. Participants do not need to be expert hikers, but they should be in reasonable physical shape. The guide will assess and choose the hiking routes for each day based on weather and the fitness/experience level of the group.
  • The guide has the right to change hiking routes in the itinerary based on weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Most hiking paths in Iceland are not paved. Hiking paths have natural surfaces, sometimes based on old sheep tracks. Trail terrain can have lava rocks, loose gravel, soft dirt and muddy areas. Hiking poles are highly recommended.

2. Day 5: Entrance to Myvatn Nature Baths | 1-2 hrs

4. Day 7 or 8: Super jeep tour to Vík Village, drive in the black sand | 4 hrs

5. Day 1 or 10: Non guided tour to the Blue Lagoon on arrival/departure | 2-4 hrs
