The Laugavegur Trek is the most famous hiking trail in Iceland. It is world renowned for its astounding and breathtaking sceneries. The Laugavegur and Fimmvorduhals Trek was chosen one of the "20 Best Hikes in the World" by National Geographic. Starting in Landmannalaugar, a geothermal wonderland, and making its way south through the Highlands, fields of obsidian, red and yellow mountains, black sands and sparkling white glaciers are just some of the views you can see. The Laugavegur trail ends in Thorsmork, a green valley nestled at the foot of the famous glacier Eyjafjallajökull. On this 4 day Trek you experience some of the best nature Iceland has to offer including glaciers, volcanos, lava fields, geothermal colors and hot springs. There is a maintained track for a majority of the route and your guide will ensure you don't miss the best spots along the way, whilst explaining the scenery and geological history of Iceland.

Itinerary:

  1. Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar. Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker.
  2. Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn.
  3. Álftavatn to Lake-Emstrur.
  4. Emstrur to Thorsmork Valley to Reykjavik.

DAY 01 – Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar. Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker.

The tour starts at the “Reykjavík tourist info” in Aðalstræti 2 at 7.00. Aðalstræti 2 is within walking distance of most hotels and guesthouses in central Reykjavík. We also offer a pick-up service from your door for a small fee. After introductions, you will board the scheduled bus that takes you to Landmannalaugar. The drive takes about 3-4 hours and will be along the beautiful south coast before turning inland and passing Iceland´s most active volcano, Hekla. The hike starts in Landmannalaugar and as you walk through this geothermal wonderland you can admire colorful mountains and steaming hot springs. After you walk by the beautiful hot spring Stórihver, you will cross into the obsidian desert by Hrafntinnusker.

Note: Overnight stay in Hrafntinnusker, in one of the most remote huts in Iceland. Lunch, Refreshments and dinner is included. (Driving time: 3-4 hrs Distance: 12 km (7.5 mi) Walking time: 4-5 hrs. Ascent: 470 m (1540′))

DAY 02 – Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn.

After breakfast the trek continues along the Reykjafjöll mountains before descending into the Jökultungur area. The geothermal activity has turned these gullies yellow and red. From the top of Jökultungur there is a great view over the Fjallabak area and lake Álftavatn which is the next overnight stop. On route to Álftavatn you will cross an unbridged stream on foot.

DAY 03 – Álftavatn to Lake-Emstrur.

The day starts with another refreshing stream crossing as you make your way past the green volcano Stórasúla and into the black desert of Mælifellssandur. On the way you will see Hattafell, a volcano with a strange flat top. The trek continues through the black glacial desert and into Emstrur where there is a chance to enjoy the view of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Just before reaching the hut in Botnar you will turn off the path to look at Markarfljótsgljúfur, deep canyons carved out by the glacial river Markarfljót. The hut in Botnar is in a little green oasis, a welcome sight after walking through the black sands.

DAY 04 – Emstrur to Thorsmork Valley to Reykjavik.

Leaving Emstrur behind, the journey continues to Þórmörk. The trail takes you within a few kilometers from the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier. As you descend towards Almenningar trees begin to appear, a sign you are getting closer to the coast. You will then walk at the foot of the characteristic mountain Einhyrningur and into the dense birch forest in Thorsmork. Thorsmork is a green valley situated between the rivers Krossa, Thronga and Markarfljot. It offers a beautiful mountain view of the volcanic glaciers Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull.

Note: You will return to Reykjavík in the evening at around 22:00 & stop at the tourist information office on Aðalstræti 2, situated in the center of the city. From there, you can catch a taxi or local bus to your accommodation. A transfer to your accommodation can also be arranged prior to this tour.
